<itunes:summary>A revolting Revolutionary is he. The Matt Cockburn Fake Radio Show is recorded in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, once a month. The host, Matt Cockburn is an independent film actor, musician, painter, filmaker and all around fascinating sex symbol. The show is about nothing. It is two hours of Matt, his co-hosts Jeremy Schaffner, Peter C. Bonfanti, Paul Hutchinson (of totalpodcastrophe fame) and John Erikson, talking about what is going on in the world and their lives, all-the-while trying to entertain as well as enlighten. An interesting mix of seriousness talk and goofy ass-headed-ness. Just listen.

*All shows recorded and released before Feb 21, 2009, are co-hosted by Jessica Johnson, Jeremy Schaffner and Paul Hutchinson, with the addition of John Erikson in October, 2008. Peter C. Bonfanti was inaugurated co-host on February 21, 2009

It has come to my attention that our most recent show, MC305 The Return of Em, has caused some unintended collateral damage with members of her family. I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to those family members. But before I do, I would like to explain what lead up to it.

The Matt Cockburn Show is a free-form talk show in which we talk about the events and people that are in our lives, if the story is interesting enough. Nothing is scripted or planned out. Apparently, the previous show, MC304 Happy Friggin’ Valentine’s Day, had caught the interest of people and many of them commented here on mattcockburn.com and through email at mattcockburnshow@gmail.com . We began the show with listener emails, most of which asking for an update on the Emily situation. I relayed what I had been informed of by her friends, some family members and mutual acquaintences or friends since I had no more contact with her. Of course, I gave my opinions and paraphrased part of an email I sent her several weeks prior to recording. These words have upset some members of her family who have been struggling for years to help her with her problems. My intention was not to humiliate these relatives of hers, nor was it to pour salt on the wound that she has opened and re-opened in them throughout her life. Her family members have treated me with nothing but kindness and welcomed me into their circle immediately. While I may have some disdain for Emily, I do not extend that to people around her. I do not believe in guilt by association.

Quite honestly, I did not think that even Emily would seek out the show as there is no way that she would be notified of it in an atuomated way through facebook or mattcockburn.com. Not unless she visited them looking for things. So, I was surprised to find out that she played the show, or told said relatives about it. While she misrepresented the context in which the objectionable things were said in order to gain support for her cause, the pain it caused the relatives she told was not something I wanted to have happen, nor did I intend to cause that result. My sole intention was to be true to whatever audience we have gained and keep them informed of developments in a story that they took a great deal of interest in. Also, I am aware of county officials who visit this website and listen to the show. I guess I had hoped that they would have thought that where there is smoke, there’s usually fire, and step up their investigation of her for the sake of her children.

As can be seen in scattered posts here on mattcockburn.com, Emily has commented calling for me to release her studio interview in which she “defends” herself against MC304 Happy Friggin Valentine’s Day. After recording the interview with her, I felt that she did herself no good and only harm. I also noticed that I didn’t recognize the girl in front of me. This indicated to me that she was out of control of her impulses and thoughts. Therefore, out of respect for her and her issues, I chose not to let her prove herself worse than I presented the situation. Her interview, I felt, did just that. I felt like I was picking on a mentally retarded child for losing a spelling bee. Not to be funny, but that’s how it felt. It was clear I was running circles around her. I love to be right, but not in that situation. I like a fair fight. Emily brought a squirtgun to a connonade that day. That evening, I sent her an email explaining just what I said above and I offered her an open invitation to respond in writing in the comment section of MC304 Happy Friggin Valentine’s Day. She never did. (Not until this new show and not until the walls of her life were crumbling down around her and she needed a diversion. Fine.)

At that time, I had still thought that she was honest and truthful with me in the days leading up to that last conversation. In the weeks since, however, I have learned that in the final 5 conversations we had, adding up to many hours that I could have done something productive in, I was fed a heap of lies. There’s one thing I cannot suffer and that is being lied to by someone who I once felt close to.

That, combined with the requests for an update on the situation, and the success of the last show, lead to the show, MC305 The Return of Em, and all the comments and parodies therein. All information I shared was not created by me or anyone on the show. It was information that was relayed to me from various sources, many of which, independent of the other and telling basically the same story. I did NOT mention the stories I couldn’t get corroboration on. The imitation of Emily (which sounds nothing like her actually voice) was based on said stories and my own conversations with her towards the end.

With that said, I could have perhaps thought twice about those who love her and are trying to help her listening to the show. I should have been more tactful in how I shared the information and which information I shared. I honestly didn’t think anyone around her would listen. Even still, I knew that many people who I didn’t even know knew me or her were aware of her situation and have confronted me with their two cents since MC304. This made me think I couldn’t do more harm than Emily had already done herself and her reputation.

I’d like to be clear that the aforementioned is a list of reasons, not excuses, for the content of the last show.

In conclusion, I would like to extend a genuine apology to the family members who have contacted me and to those who haven’t or who have told me they agree with me. Agree or disagree, I did not intend to bring any more shame or pain to the situation. I hope that you will accept my apology.

To the listeners who have already and might in the future send more emails regarding Emily: she will no longer be mentioned on the show so long as her communications with me cease with the release of this statement. I am eager to put her behind me and, therefore, will not dig the story up on future shows.

Again, that is on the condition that she no longer fuels the fire by commenting on facebook, mattcockburn.com, or privately via email, telephone, in-person stop-and-chats or visits, by herself or a proxy. Should that not be met, it will be hard to let the situation die on the show. In other words, I will hold up my end of the bargain, so long as she agrees to and holds up what I ask her end be.

At the risk of repeating myself, I would like to thank Emily’s family for treating me so well in the year and a half that I got to know you. Your kindness is the fondest memory I shall take from the whole experience. I wish you Godspeed and the best of luck with your endeavors and the current situation.

Thank you,

Matt

As promised, we are releasing one half-hour show per week. This show is a goodie. We answer some listener emails in the first segment. Most of them are asking for a follow up on the Emily situation. So, I answer them… basically explaining that, as far as I am concerned, there is no situation. But it leads me to explain how I am on a mission to rid myself of crazy, emotional vampires, like her. I planned to tell a tale in the second segment about some other vampires I know. We don’t get that far, however, because just at the top of the second segment, the studio hotline rings and on the other line is a surprise caller who is calling to “defend” herself against the last show. Hmmmm…. I wonder who that could be…

As promised, we are releasing one half-hour show per week. This show is a goodie. We answer some listener emails in the first segment. Most of them are asking for a follow up on the Emily situation. So, I answer them... basically explaining that, as far as I am concerned, there is no situation. But it leads me to explain how I am on a mission to rid myself of crazy, emotional vampires, like her. I planned to tell a tale in the second segment about some other vampires I know. We don't get that far, however, because just at the top of the second segment, the studio hotline rings and on the other line is a surprise caller who is calling to "defend" herself against the last show. Hmmmm.... I wonder who that could be...
