how this became about east vs. west is beyond me. your ability to conflate themes is quite amazing! and peace isn't a movement, it's a consciousness, an ideal, a way of life. and it didn't begin with the cold war, it began with god and creation, and the beginning of the known universe. think bigger! we have big problems, yes. but we have a bigger god! i'm not being naive, just working for what i WANT, not what i have. working for PEACE, not war. as ghandi said, be the change you want to see in the world. as Jesus said, be a light for the world! and another guy said something like that: i think it was ronald reagan!

as a wise old man once said: "you can work for peace in one hand and shit in the other and see which one fills up first." the western world is not who has been making war. the notion that western civilization must change to appease the ones who hate and want to kill us is backwards and should be shameful. would peace and happiness be great? absolutely. are singing songs and eating gumdrops and having daisy chains in meadows of forget-me-nots the way i would rather live? well, the daisy chain part, yes. but is it realistic? no. is and has the peace-movement ever been actually for peace? yes, among the naive. but the movement has its roots (this is all something you can research and see for yourself and not take my word for it) in the early days of the Cold War. It was designed to destroy America from within by calling each and every war we get involved in.... pre-emptive, defensive or otherwise... illegal and immoral. As long as people hate, there will be no peace even if we disarm and grab our ankles and spread our cheeks, we will still have enemies. History shows us time and time again that peace is only attained through victory. Might still makes right, ya know.

This is why Johnny is exhausted with me. I won't budge. I think she lives in a dream world and she thinks I'm an asshole. But I have fun watching the vein on her forehead pop out. Ok, now I'm going to my girlfriend's house so her son can throw rocks and knives at me.

Hey Sno and Matt,

Sorry I haven't written yet on this topic. I've been busy, but I am also so tired of arguing with Matt. i feel like I'm talking to a wall. In many ways, I understand Matt's concerns and his views. But I think that we should be working on creating a new consciousness of peace, which is the ONLY way out of hard times. And there is a crisis in the US of a general fear and lack of integrity, which is highlighted in our political system and financial and media institutions. The almighty dollar wins out. Unfortunately, those who have been yelling loudest about morality, integrity, and "family values"--lately the far right wing fanatical Republicans (not ALL, but the fanatics of the party)--have been the biggest hypocrites, leading us into one war I think we shouldn't be in, alienating us from our allies and partners around the world, and steeping us the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. The fact is, that like Obama or not, he is our only hope. It was going to be him or McCain. If someone chose to exercise their right to vote for a third candidate, that's cool. But it was either going to be Obama or McCain. While I admire McCain's tremendous service, I was concerned about voting him for three main reasons, then a fourth. 1) While I admire his co-sponsoring of the immigration reform bill with ted kennedy, he did not have the power or influence to get his party on board. it was eventually voted down by republicans in the congress, which i think is the main reason, or at least a big one, why the republicans lost the congress two years ago. 2) I have seen him pander increasingly to his base, which is the loud minority of far right-wing voters, steering further away from his centrist (and I think common sense) policies that made him a Maverick in the first place. 2) i am pro-choice; he is staunchly not. And finally, the big kicker 4) Sarah Pallin. What an insult to women and to the American people to chose this person as a running mate. If this was his first executive decision, i knew i could not trust his judgement, and that he, like bush, was ill-prepared for the office and would pander to their base, rather than make common-sense decisions. Choosing her was perhaps the most insulting thing I may have ever seen to women, in my opinion. now, don't forget, I have been a Republican my whole life, but I am so disappointed by the party. So, step in Barak Obama. This is the first time in my political lifetime that I have heard a candidate speak of sacrifice, speak words of hope and peace, speak words of transformation. I like Joe Biden. I agree with Obama's vote on the war. Frankly, that's all I had to go on, I'll be honest. But that was enough to make me take a chance on a fresh voice that mirrors my own values, rather than vote for a party that I have seen embody all the negative traits they judge others for. And Matt, i must agree with Sno, as you know I do, that I have found your tone throughout this whole campaign and election frightening for its vitriol, and it's scary. We all have a right to speak our minds, and that is an important part of justice, but I think then we must see how we can create something positive with love and on the path to peace. we don't have to be meek when a fight is called for, but matt I don't think in your heart that you believe in the ideal of peace, and without that I think there is no hope. Peace for the world begins with peace for ourselves, and my belief is that we find that through God's love, self-love, and loving others. I would like to see our country DOING so much for good (which we already do do in droves) that there just isn't any time, money, or energy left for all the negative. There are things we in business, media, education, and politics can DO to create spaces for peace, and I think they come from helping others. I guess I'm willing to see what happens if we try it; maybe I'm naive, maybe I'm wrong. But I want to see if America can be a land of pluralism and individualism at the same time? I think we can, though it is a social experiment. I, too, hope you're wrong Matt. But I'm willing to give Obama a try. Hope!

Its OK to argue with you Matt.I know that what is in your mind you will say it and you give that right to the person you are talking to.But for a moment i was thinking i am responsible for rising the socialism and if i was there near you,you would beat me up lol.
You are a smart man.And i am really worried that your prognoses might happen. And what if the rest that didnt vote for Obama think like you way also....
Ok my head hutrs lol.
Putin wants to be a president again? Some people just cant get enough. But i think his puppet,Medvedev is doing great. They think a like so its all the same Medvedev or Putin. But who am i to judge. Most of the people like me dont understand of politics. But i think everyone should be involved and well-informed.
Socialism...now thats complicated.I was born in a time of Democracy.I was free what foreign language i want to learn at school and that was my first memory of me practicing a free will. Before me,the people had no choice about anything.Only direction you can look at was Russia. And the tactic of brain washing was kinda succesfull. Our brothers the russians.I remember the time i was thinking its only Bulgaria and Russia.Nothing else. But i was like 5 years old.Bulgaria was the little sister of course and was looking at Russia as the big good Bro.And i still love this nation and i have admirations because they were the reason of us now to be free. They saved us from the ottoman slavery.
But from what i heard about the time during the socialism i am pretty much confused. My voice within is telling me it wasnt a good time.Mostly because you can be arrested saying America is cool country.Or listening amrican music, wearing american jeans and let me tell you, some of the people could get a jeans and it was Huge lol but if they catch you,you go right in jail and being cross-examinated.Thats what some people are telling me now.I like when they tell me stories about that time. And when i ask them which time is better most of them are saying-now.Others theses are contraversy, because they say it was better then but they wouldnt go back if they had this chance.
Your country is not gone,Matt.I dont know why you think this way.You still can be proud and i dont see reason why you shouldnt. The time is changing.Believe in your new President.Do you think he doenst know the history of the country he is about to lead?Do you think he doesnt have the same feeling you have when he watch this video? He is a man of today, holding in himself the legacy of the past and the people that shaped and gave birth to America. And beside patriot Barack have to be a President also.

here is a dramatization of the vote taken to release our Declaration of Independence. The basis of my discomfort is that we risked very much to shed ourselves of a King's yoke and now it feels to me that we may as well give the keys to ou contry back. Listen to the words of the Declaration. Substitute "king" with "Federal government" or "president".

Sno, you have misread my tone, or at least who it is directed at. It was directed at the people who voted for him, not the rest of the world.

I just find it strange that while former socialist/communist countries in the world are finally seeing the benefits of capitialism and moving that way, the U.S. goes towards socialism. We were once a country that was a beacon of actual hope and change and that power was in the hands of the individual. Just the other day, Barry said that we are not a nation of individuals. He's playing with fire because, while many/most of his supporters buy that crap, there are still many Americans who would prefer to be the independent "man out on a limb" than to engage in group-thinking and legistlated behavior. Obama has told us plenty of times that this is where he will take us. History (which has not been properly taught in this country for many decades, and for just this reason) has taught us that when the electorate figures out that they can vote themselves goodies from the public treasury, that nation will be in the throes of death. We have been in those throes and now we are guaranteeing the death.

Many think I am crazy or paranoid. But those people tend to not know much about history which is a great way to predict what the future can hold.

Only time will tell who is right or wrong here. I can't see individuals actually thriving after Obama's domestic policies and tax policies are in full swing. I see a greater dependence on the government, further balkanization of the country and, as for unity, I see people forcing it through intimidation, coercion and other ugly things. Paul tells me things will be ok. I hope he's right. Believe me, I don't want to be right here. I have never wanted to be so wrong before. B8ut I am 90% sure that I am right.

So, Sno, because we disagree does not mean that I was attacking you. You and Johnny, among a few others, are two of the people I still have respect for after a disagreement. So when I say Obama supporters are idiots, or if I say that, I usually don't, in my mind, include my friends, for if my friends were actually idiots, I wouldn't pick them to be my friends. As for the comrade Sno thing, I was just getting used to using such terms. That was directed at the change coming over here.

Let me ask you a question: What is the Eastern European reaction or interpretation of Putin wanting to be president again since our election?

Wow...your words are scaring.
Maybe i am one of those who dont really understand of politics. And i am sorry if my admiration for Obama made me look like i am stupid.Sorry.
I think its little bit unfair to make the wealthiest pay higher taxes than the middle class. They earned it and they worked for the money.I know.I am with you on that point.
I see ironic tone in your comment. But thats ok.I admire McCain and if he was chosen instead of Obama,i would share the 90% of the excitment i shared because of Barack. You say his name is similar to the names of people your troops have been fighting for 6 years, is that making him a bad guy or a man who can be called...i even dont want to say the word.My name is close to the Rosie O'donnell,is that making me angry lesbian?
Unity.Well what can i say. That is something you feel.
And thats what i said''Isnt it too beautiful, isnt it too smooth everything?'' because exactly when you are filled with optimism and hope everything can go wrong.
But,Mr Cockburn i really, maybe just as much as you ,want everything to be OK.
Because if you know what is happening in my country you wouldnt be so afraid about your future and your kid's future.I call Bulgaria the country of the absurd. You have this beautiful peace of land, comparing with the Paradise.1300 years of History and OMG What a History. But its very difficult to find proper explanation of what is going on.The mess in the parlament, the people on leader positions are under arrest, the mafia which controls the drug supplying and human trafficking.Millions of bulgarian money are gone and no one knows where and how they disappeared.Well thats one part of the problems. You would say, nothing new,but we are just about 7 millions situated in 110,910 km² it should be easy all that to be under control, but its such a mess. And with all that, if you ask me about the good things i can go on and talk for ever.
''Hail Obama,Comrade Sno''... whats that for?
Dont be angry at me,Matt i am nothing more than a listener, remember.
Now,have a peaceful and beautiful day/evening.
Cheers.

I see ironic tone in your comment. But thats ok.I admire McCain and if he was chosen instead of Obama,i would share the 90% of the excitment i shared because of Barack. You say his name is similar to the names of people your troops have been fighting for 6 years, is that making him a bad guy or a man who can be called…i even dont want to say the word.My name is close to the Rosie O’donnell,is that making me angry lesbian?
Unity.Well what can i say. That is something you feel.
And thats what i said”Isnt it too beautiful, isnt it too smooth everything?” because exactly when you are filled with optimism and hope everything can go wrong.
But,Mr Cockburn i really, maybe just as much as you ,want everything to be OK.
Because if you know what is happening in my country you wouldnt be so afraid about your future and your kid’s future.I call Bulgaria the country of the absurd.
”Hail Obama,Comrade Sno”… whats that for?
Dont be angry at me,Matt i am nothing more than a listener, remember.
Now,have a peaceful and beautiful day/evening.
Cheers.

Thanks for your perspective, Sno. It's interesting to see the hype has spread around the world. The only good I see coming out of this is that we not only have a black president, but one with a name that is similar to the names of people our troops have been fighting for 6 years. You would never have seen a President Otto von Steuben during WWII.

The one thing I don't get is this notion of unity. It's funny how the people who are saying we must unify under Barry are the same ones who wouldn't unify under Bush if you paid them. And it's hard to unify when the man was elected by telling Americans that we are a sucky country that has never done anything right. In doing so he has offended at least 47 million voters who love their country and think we were a great people before Bush and in spite of Bush when he was in office. I always respect my president regardless of who it is. But that's mainly respect for the office they hold. But once his policies start to encroach on my civil liberties and my personal economy, I will have a huge problem, as will millions of other Americans, including many of his supporters.

My attitude is changing as the days go by. Now, I can't wait to see the look on the faces of his supporters when they realize they will have their money stolen from them to give to those who won't work and, therefore, don't pay taxes.

My basic problem is, Sno, that I feel my chance of a future is gone and he has told us that. Raising taxes and taking away incentives to invest and work steals the future from me and my children and my children's children. Only time will tell, but I forsee 1984 coming really soon. Bush helped get that started, but Barry will push it over the edge.

As I said to our new fellow citizen, Paul, the other day, get a hold of the HBO mini series John Adams (which I am in) and you will see how we are now in a state closer to a non-violent Bolschvic Revolution than we are closer to a reovlution of Liberty and individual rights and freedoms in John Adams's day. The problem with our country now is that we don't know how we started and why we started nor do we know the struggles we have endured to become the world's biggest superpower in only 200+ years. My fear is that has been thrown away by a electorate that is more fixated on fucking Bush than national prosperity. As you probably know over there in Eastern Europe, when the government has control over the economy and an individual's behavior and choices, a country cannot last long. I hope I'm wrong, but I study too much history to think I am. So, in a away, Obama has already brought hope to me. I hope we didn't just shoot ourselves in the foot.

Hail Obama, Comrade Sno.

Congratulations everybody.Like it or not Mr.Barack(Barry :) )Obama will be the 44th President of the United States Of America.
People are saying they see in him John F.Kennedy and Martin Luther King, but still having his unique personality and enormous potential to lead and unite. And to tell you the truth i havent been so inspired lately. Please, dont think i do not like the other candidate-Mr.McCain who is a hero-literaly.We can find in him all of the american ideals about heroic behavior, honesty, bravery and many qualities, and enough experience to be a President. One bulgarian journalist said that he is the personification of the american flag. But the nation voted for the man who inspired not only America but the rest of the world.I cant think of a preson who unite the world this way. Many things he must prove and do about the promises he made.I think that you must and you need to co-operate him and i know all of you americans will :)
20 million voters more than the last elections and that is MUCH.Most of them, people who had never voted before.I heard that even one state voted for democrats in the 60's,'67 i think, sorry cant remember which year,so they voted then for the last time and again this year..so its a big achievement.
Great moment in the history, indeed.Great times for the U.S and the rest-i hope. The Very First African-American President in the White House-fact :).
And Michelle Obama.Oh, how sweet is she.And inteligent.I want to meet this woman.I can learn many things from her.
Isnt that too sweet and beautiful?...Now i am getting little scared. Now what you -americans and we -the rest of the world, are waiting are sensible and well considered actions with 99% of succes. And of course...thats their only priority and the economic crisis.Their-Obama and his team.
And doesnt Biden looks like this actor who played in the serial''Providence'' lol.I heard good and bad things for him.But if Barry picked him he must be productive.Otherwise he might be stunt actor for this guy in Providence.
Oh and also very important thing-A dog is about to enter the white house too.Yayyy! Now thats exciting because the Obama's never had one before ;)I wonder if he would take the Grammy at his new home.Actually,i think i want to read his book-''"Dreams From My Father''.
 Good Luck,America.
