This is a tad longer than most. We start the show by telling my tale of pissing off American Idol Jordin Sparks, but meeting Steph Jones. Then we critique my interview with Steph.
We partake in some listener emails including a happy 28th birthday to our #1 Fan in Chicago, Stacy (March 29).
And you will enjoy our discussion on guilty pleasure songs… ya know, the songs you hear on the radio while driving, roll up your window and crank and sing along to… until you get to a traffic light, that is.
We also share our top 5 greatest voices of all time. Of course, this leads to controversy and a near engagement in fisticuffs between Johnson and Paul.
*You can be a part of our next show. Send us an email roasting Johnson. That’s right, our next show is the first of many Matt Cockburn faux- Celebrity Birthday Roasts. If you want to have your email read, or read it either live, or on the phone, send it to mattcockburnshow@gmail.com . And if you don’t know what a roast is, watch this and explore further.
Everyone’s Top 5… somewhat in order….
great show. great songs. Johnson is too loud though. but i started listening thinking i would just listen up to the first break and ended up listening straight through. you guys are great.
Johnson is SO WRONG about Schaffner’s #1… here’s what i mean. insulting someone’s taste in music is insulting that person. matt’s analogy of saying another man’s wife is ugly is just as insulting. music is deeply personal and says a lot about the person who listens to it. i do like roy orbison, though.
Matt, you are a nit wit some times. Marvin Gay’s dad did not shoot him because he foudn him in bed with another man. i hope you were joking.
Thanks, Ralph. I believe it was spelled Marvin GayE. Not gay. And, yes I know that his dad didn’t find him withanother man. I was playing dumb. Something I think you don’t need to “play”. Thanks for listening.
Laurenlvr–are you really Jeremy Schaffner writing under an assumed name? Regardless, let’s agree to disagree on Dave Matthews. Though I do like the song Crash…for about 45 seconds, then I have to turn it off. But I don’t hate that song. And let’s agree to AGREE on Roy Orbison–a true classic. Thanks for listening all the way through!!!
JimboAkimbo–you’re right, my mic was too loud; we’ll work on that for the next show; thanks for the feedback.
And Matt, thanks for that wonderful clip from the Bodyguard–I loved it! What a lovely trip down memory lane. Kevin Costner is so hot, even with the worst haircut in cinamtic history.
Johnson owes me $150 for blowing out my speakers.
Hallooooo.
Hey where’s the shout out for Bulgaria,Matt?Fix that next time lol ;)And stop saying your interview with Steph was bad beacuse it was Great!Ahahah and how come you didnt recognize Jordin Sparks lol…never mind iam sure she took the joke about *LOST*,because she is so cooooool.
And here are my guilty pleasure songs…well some of them.
1.Paula Abdul-Rush,Rush
2.Duran Duran-Come Undone
3.Berlin-Take My Breathe Away
4.Kim Wilde-You keep me hangin’ On
5.Richard Marx-Should’ve know better
And yeah i am loving Whintey Houston-Bodygueard,Donna Summer and Sade.Old school 4ever!!!
Guys, i had GREAT time listening your show.Keep on rockin’!!!
I owe you all an apology, especially you Schaff; I was wrong! After carefully listening again to to our top fives, I must concede that in fact Diana Krall is MUCH WORSE than Dave Matthews. In fact, she is so bad (especially in this clip where she butchers a Billy Joel song, which should actually be a crime punishable by law) that in contrast to her, I actually like Dave Matthews. Hey, when I’m wrong, I say I’m wrong!
Oh, and SHOUT OUT to Bulgaria!! Can we come visit? You know what they say, “there’s nothing like Sophia in the Springtime!” Sno, thanks for your fabulous guilty pleasure songs. I secretly (well, not so secretly now) love Paula Abdul. Though her new song with Randy Jackson sucks rocks. I also love Cold Hearted Snake–great when you’re mad at a guy! Take care, and thanks for listening and for your comments!
Johnson, Diana Krall is sexy. Sorry you’re too jealous!
Sno, I’m glad you liked it and thanks for participating with your top 5. There was no shout out to Bulgaria because you hadn’t shown up on my radar when we recorded it. But you better believe you will be mentioned next time.
I’m curious, how does our American humor translate over there? Do we laugh at the same things?
and, Sno, may i say, in your native text: Оригинално писмо
I just wish I knew what it meant
Do I highly rate Diana Krall? Deed I do!.
So crazy Johnson has a problem with that?
Why should I care?
Go ahead and cry me a river! Little girl blue!
Diana’s voice is’wonderful.
And certainly better than Julie Mandrews.
thanks tracie. it’s nice to be appreciated once in a while.
And, Paul, what a “clever” way of beating the pants off of Johnson’s hatred for Ms. Krall, the future Mrs. Cockburn
Hey hey hey.
Johnson Yes you can come for a visit, ill make some traditional bulgarian food for you…and when you taste it you would like to stay here for ever lol.Its sooo beautiful in the spring, its beautiful in the all 4 seasons :)I really wish you could see it.
Matt i think if the joke is funny you would lough no matter what nationality you are,it matters how much you understand the language. My English is not that good, but i can understand every word.I speak and write on English through my memories from school and i finished it 8 years ago.And that what you asked me to translate means-original letter .
Kisses from little and beautiful Bulgaria.
Maybe one of our sponsors will pay for a trip to Bulgaria to do a show. that would be cool. it would also be cool if we had big-time sponsors who would pay big time bucks to enable us to do that.
Sno, you’re English is very good. Much better than my Bulgarian… which I don’t speak at all. It’s better than that.
Hey guys. Great show. Your chemistry is very real and we can tell you have fun doing the show. One complaint. My friend and I were listening and laughing and when you played the guilty pleasure songs it took us back. We were singing, or trying to, along with the songs, but couldn’t quite enjoy ourselves because Johnson was singing over ALL OF THEM! Johnson: you have a great voice. We know. But constantly singing over legends like Dolly Parton and Chaka Khan is overkill. It makes it seem like you’re showing off.
Matt, your taste in music is so good. And you’re not even 30 yet?
Schaffner and Paul, don’t listen to Johnson. Dave and Diana Krall are better than Julie Andrws. Yuck!
I hope you don’t feel we’re picking on you, johnson. We still love ya!
MinneSara,
Hey there. Thanks for your comments! I have so much fun with Matt and Schaff and Paul, and I’m glad you and your friends are tuning in and having fun along with us! What are some of your favorite guilty pleasure songs?
Where are you from? How did you find our show? Tell us about yourself!
Hey Guys. Great show. It’s really a breath of fresh air and very natural. Sounds like most of it is off-the-cuff and it works for you.
A few pieces of advice that I hope you take as contructive criticism. First, let me say that I used to work in radio on a popular New York talk station. So, I think I know a few things about this stuff. I don’t know if you have any desires to get into radio, or broadcasting of any kind, but here’s my advice in case you are.
First off, and most important, if you are calling it the Matt Cockburn Fake Radio, then let Matt run the show. It sounds too much, at least in Episode 3 (I just started listening to episode 2) that “Johnson” tries to wrangle control of the show. Maybe she’s just having too much fun, but, Johnson, you should back off a tad and let Matt steer the ship. You seem to get bored with a topic before it has run its course. The listener, believe it or not, likes to hear people talking. They feel like their eavesdropping. So, when you get bored, give it a few mins more before you move on. And when you do that, let the M.C. (no pun intended) move the show along.
Secondly, Schaffner needs to speak up more. He has good things to say and I think people will really like him if he magnifies his likability. Cockburn, you are a natural. Buttry to stop saying “um” and “uh”. Once in a while is ok if you are REALLY at a loss for words. But every time you have to take a second to think of a word, don’t say “um” Just bite your tongue. Another thing I found in ensemble shows is that when someone says “um” a lot they usually do it for two reasons. 1) loss for words and 2) someone else in the show will take that pause to jump in and speak.
Most of all, I couldn’t agree more with MinneSara. Johnson, enough with the singing.
I hope I didn’t ruffle any feathers here. Just know that if I thought you suced I wouldn’t have commented at all. I think you guys are onto something here and, with some polishing, could trun this into something big.
Good luck
Ray
Hey Ray,
Thanks for taking the time to give us your comments. You have a lot of constructive, helpful things to say and I appreciate it! We do have so much fun. In fact, I’ve never had more fun in my life. I agree, we all want to hear more from Schaffner–he’s like a little Buddha–doesn’t say much, but when he does it’s so profound! And Matt is very talented; he cracks me up so much all the time! I love listening to his stories–he tells them like an old man recounting his youth, even though he’s younger than I am! As for the singing, ok, ok, I get it! : ) I’m a singer and I sing constantly. Maybe we need a JOHNSON sings minute on the show so I can get it all out of my system! I’m sure Matt and Schaff will get me good on it on my birthday roast–next month’s show.
We are definitely interested in getting into the radio biz! I’m glad you like the show and hope you continue to stay tuned. How did you find us?
Well, thanks again, and keep listening!! Sincerely, JOHNSON
Testing
Johnson,
Keep the singing out of it unless it’s done in a comedic way. Ya know when you’re out with friends having fun and that one guy or girl in the group who fancies him/herself as the next great singer hears a song come on the radio and starts singing seriously while staring everyone in the face for a reaction? [Breathe] That’s what it’s like listening to you sing. It would be the same thing if Matt or Schaffner did it that way.
Again, just trying t be helpful. I’m in a rush so i don’t have time to kindly craft the wording here.
Ray
Hm hm hmmmmm.
I just read the comment about how Johnson need to back off and let Matt talk more. With all me respect to you Ray but i dont think there are rules about who must speak more and less. And if they put the show into order and rules i think it wont be interesting, the spontaneous things and convos bring more fun.I think Matt provokes Johnson to talk more because he knows she is funny and interesting and contributing for the show
Guys have i told you that YOU ROCK?!?Seriously i am so glad i fouund you ;).
~Rosi aka Sno-the bulgarian rose
We’re glad you found us too, Sno. Thanks again.
Some other great voices I forgot to mention (and also some of my favorite artists, in general–these are artists I listen to a lot): Kate Bush and Freddie Mercury!
